The CUNY Queens College Choir will perform at 7:30pm on Friday December 3, 2010 at the SUNY Cortland Dowd Fine Arts Theater. James John directs the choral program that will span five centuries of music, featuring composers Sheng, Whitacre, Billings and others. The concert will also feature solos and duets of seasonal selections by SUNY Cortland students with Stephen B. Wilson, piano. Admission is free.

The Queens College Choir is a select ensemble of 35-40 music majors in the college's Aaron Copland School of Music, and is the school's principal undergraduate choral organization. Repertoire spans a wide variety of periods and styles, and occasionally includes the performance of major works combined with the Queens College Chorus and/or Choral Society.
James John conducts the Queens College Choir, Vocal Ensemble and Choral Society, teaches choral conducting, and serves as advisor to the graduate program in vocal performance. Past performances with the School of Music's choral ensembles include an award winning production of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, Requiems by Mozart and Verdi, and "A Night at the Opera" with Queens College alumna Erika Sunnegärdh of the Metropolitan Opera.
A notable part of the program will be Two Folk Songs from Qinghai by Bright Sheng which is scored for chorus, two pianos and percussion. Sheng is an alumnus of Queens College and a 2001 recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Award. He is currently the Visiting Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at the Aaron Copland School of Music for 2010.
2010-2011 has been designated the "Year Of China" at Queens College. As part of the school's commitment to global education, a wide variety of events exploring the culture and music of China are taking place throughout the year. The Queens College Choir's performance of Bright Sheng's Two Folk Songs from Qinghai was inspired partly by this initiative. The first folksong in the set is entitled "Morningstar Lily," describing a man who climbs a mountain to retrieve a lily for his beloved. All of the works on the program were prompted by this theme. I am the Rose of Sharon by early American composer William Billings and Vidi Speciosam ("I Beheld Her, Beautiful as a Dove") by Spanish Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria, are love poems from the Song of Songs featuring the lily as a primary image. The same is true of 20th century American composer Irving Fine's Have You Seen the White Lily Grow (with a text by Ben Johnson), as well as Eric Whitacre's fiery setting of, With a Lily in Your Hand (based on a poem by Federico García Lorca), which is the most recent work on the program, completed in 1992 and revised in 2001.
